Carbon monoxide poisoning claim
Every year in the UK, more than 200 people go to hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, which leads to around 50 deaths.
What is carbon monoxide (CO) and how it is caused?
CO is a colourless and odourless gas which means it is very difficult to detect. It is formed when fuels such as gas, coal, wood are not burnt properly.
When fuel burns in a room the oxygen in the room is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide builds up in the air, the fuel is prevented from burning fully and starts releasing carbon monoxide instead.
Effects of CO?
CO is very dangerous because once inhaled it reduces the amount of oxygen which can be carried in the bloodstream which damages cells, tissue and blood vessels. The oxygen carrying capacity of the blood significantly reduced and limits the availability of oxygen to the body and brain, which can lead to anoxic brain injury.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
- nausea and vomiting
- dizziness and lightheadedness
- flu-like symptoms
- palpitations (feeling your heart beat oddly)
- chest pain
- collapse without necessarily losing consciousness, followed by unconsciousness
Signs that carbon monoxide is present
- Black, sooty marks on the front covers of gas fires
- Yellow/brown stains on or around boilers, stoves or fires
- Smoke building up in rooms due to a faulty flue
- Yellow instead of blue flames coming from gas appliances
- Pilot lights frequently blowing out

Thank you again for everything, I am so happy that I can finally look towards the future and start drawing a line under the accident and putting it in the past where it belongs...I don't think I've felt this happy in ages, it's like a massive weight has been lifted from my shoulders just knowing that it's all done.
