Step and Learn is a charity dedicated to assisting the physical and educational improvements of children with Cerebral Palsy. They aim to view each child holistically, educating and motivating them through play to become active and independent participants in their daily lives.The ethos behind the charity is based on Conductive Education with a view to teaching children to control their physical movements, on the basis that those with a motor disability can learn in the same way as their peers.The charity aims to create a setting that is fun, stimulating yet diverse. They hope that the support they can offer will engage with the children and help them reach their full potential.X was injured at birth and after pursuing a medical negligence claim in respect of the mistakes made at the time of his birth received a substantial damages award. The Court of Protection team are currently working with X and her family to support them in moving X and her family to their newly adapted home. X is now 11 years old and has been involved with an excellent charity called Step and Learn for many years. With the litigation case over, the family has recently been able to reflect on the difference that Step and Learn has made to their lives and to X over the years.X isn’t the only one who has benefited from input and support from Step and Learn.9 year old Y was also injured at birth and has benefitted exceptionally from Step and Learn. The Court of Protection team are currently working with Y and her family at the very start of their adaptation project for their new home.Y’s mother told us: “They helped my child to become more determined to do what she wanted to do and be more independent … they made me feel positive about my child’s disability”.
