Have you ever heard of Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES)?

It is a rare but very serious condition that happens when all the nerves at the base of the spinal cord — called the cauda equina — become severely compressed. These nerves play a vital role in controlling your bladder, bowels, sexual function, and movement and sensation in your legs.

When these nerves get squeezed, it can cause some very worrying symptoms, often referred to as “red flags.” Knowing these warning signs can help people act quickly and potentially prevent permanent damage.

Let’s take a closer look at what these red flags are and why they matter.

Diagnosing Cauda Equina Syndrome quickly

CES is considered a medical emergency. The longer the nerves stay compressed, the higher the risk of lasting damage — like incontinence, sexual dysfunction, or even paralysis. That is why it is so important to recognise the signs and get help straight away.

When to seek help

If you notice any of these symptoms — especially if they come on suddenly — you should see a doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a huge difference and may help avoid permanent problems.

Remember: CES might be rare, but its consequences can be life-changing.
