For many individuals under the Court of Protection, particularly those with disabilities affecting speech and mobility, making friends and socialising can be incredibly challenging. Isolation and loneliness can have profound effects on mental well-being, making it crucial to find accessible and inclusive platforms that facilitate social interaction. Fortunately, several organisations and online services exist to help these individuals connect with others in a way that suits their needs. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are actively researching these platforms.

Sense: Virtual buddying befriending service

One option is Sense’s Virtual Buddying Befriending Service, a free nationwide programme dedicated to helping disabled individuals find companionship. This service pairs participants with a buddy for regular conversations, either online, via phone, or through text and emails if verbal communication is difficult.

What makes Sense particularly appealing is the ongoing support they provide. They regularly check in on participants and even arrange activities or provide technological support to ensure smooth communication. This flexibility is especially beneficial for non-verbal individuals who may prefer alternative communication methods.

Luv2meetU: friendship service for adults with disabilities

Another platform is Luv2meetU. This service is designed for adults with physical and learning disabilities, offering both face-to-face and online social opportunities. Luv2meetU Online allows individuals to engage with others across the UK through virtual events and social media platforms.

For non-verbal users, Luv2meetU provides options for typed communication, allowing them to develop friendships at their own pace. The emphasis on shared experiences and social activities makes it an effective tool for combating loneliness.

Tellmi: a safe, anonymous mental health support community

For those who prefer a more open-ended digital space to connect with others, Tellmi offers a safe and anonymous community where individuals can talk about their interests, emotions, and experiences. This app is moderated for safety and includes in-house counsellors to provide support when needed. While it is not a dedicated friendship service, it does offer a space where individuals can interact with like-minded people and potentially form lasting connections over shared interests such as pets, hobbies, or daily life experiences.

Social prescribing via GP referral

Another avenue worth exploring is social prescribing, which allows individuals to be referred by their GP to a Social Prescribing Link Worker. These professionals help clients find suitable social groups and activities, both online and offline, that align with their interests and needs and connects individuals to nonmedical social opportunities.

This has certainly made us consider the impact of loneliness on our clients and the need to research online platforms. Socialisation is not impossible and can be helped by the right platform. Services like Sense Virtual Buddying, Luv2meetU, Tellmi, and social prescribing provide vital opportunities for making friends in a comfortable and accessible manner. By leveraging these resources, individuals may overcome the barriers of isolation and form meaningful connections that enhance their quality of life.
