At Boyes Turner we specialise in recovering compensation for victims that have sustained a traumatic back injury from road traffic accidents. Our dedicated knowledge means that we understand more than others how important clear and simple advice and assistance is following a spinal injury. Working with the injured person and their family to help them rebuild their lives is our priority.

A spinal injury tends to have a serious impact on individuals and their families and the chances of a total recovery are usually slim. With some degree of paralysis which can have a severe impact on quality of life.

During a road traffic accident a person’s body can sustain a sudden blow to the back causing a fracture or dislocation of vertebrae. Serious damage begins when spinal cord tissues are either bruised or torn by disjointed vertebrae fragments. This can happen whether the inured party was a driver, passenger or pedestrian.

Types of spinal injuries

Spinal injuries range from slipped discs to permanent nerve damage which can potentially result in paralysis. If the spinal cord is damaged as a result of a road traffic accident it can result in:

  • Loss of or reduced sensation in limbs
  • Loss of or reduced movement in limbs
  • Loss of or reduced control in bowel and/or bladder function
  • Reflexive actions or spasms which are out of the patients control
  • Changes to sexual sensitivity, function and potentially fertility
  • Painful or intense sensations

Medical professionals gauge the level of injury on the spinal cord and this measurement is vital in assessing which parts of the body may be affected by loss of function or paralysis. The levels equate to groups of nerves along the spine which are divided in four areas: Sacral, Lumbar, Thoracic and Cervical.

Depending on the severity of the injury caused by a road traffic accident some people can return to close to their previous lives however most suffer from long lasting, if not permanent, damage and therefore have to adapt to a new way of living.
