As a solicitor in Boyes Turner’s leading education team, Joanna helps children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities and their families to access the additional help and support that they need from their local authority, so that they can access, enjoy and succeed in their education.
Joanna advises on Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) matters and in relation to appeals to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST) against local authority refusals to conduct an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment, refusals to issue an EHCP following a needs assessment, where the EHCP does not adequately identify the needs and provision required for the child or young person, or where the parents consider that the school placement named in the EHCP will not meet the needs of their child.
Joanna adds a valuable additional dimension to the education team’s expertise, bringing her knowledge and experience of the musculoskeletal system, children and young adults’ physical and learning disability from her 15 year practice as a chartered physiotherapist. Through her former career, she gained considerable insight and understanding of the lives of children, young people and their families living with musculoskeletal and other medical and developmental issues and the complex nature of their needs.
Before joining the education team, Joanna worked in Boyes Turner’s outstanding medical negligence and Court of Protection teams - experience which, along with her physiotherapist training, provides her with a multi-faceted understanding of the importance of securing optimum educational support for the group’s severely disabled clients. Joanna works hard to support her client families in securing appropriate SEN provision to improve their quality of life, wellbeing and financial security.
"I really do appreciate your personal touch, support and encouragement to get this resolved."
Joanna is a member of the Law Society and is a member of the Education Law Association (ELAS).
In her spare time, you’ll find Joanna indulging her love of sports, hiking, dancing and spending as much time as possible outdoors. She completed the London Moonwalk in 2016. She likes travelling and going to the theatre, and is an enthusiastic hostess and cook;
“The state of the kitchen afterwards says it all!”
