Boyes Turner's specialist asbestos claims team were instructed on behalf of Mr R, a former gas engineer, to claim compensation following his diagnosis of mesothelioma. He worked in the UK for nearly thirty years before moving to Australia where he lived at the time of making the claim.

Mr R was exposed to asbestos whilst working for North Eastern Gas Board / North Eastern Gas / British Gas Plc / Transco in the UK as a distribution fitter between 1969 and 1998. His job involved re-laying gas mains pipes and attending gas leaks.

Mr R's claim settled for £257,500. The mesothelioma compensation claim was settled whilst he was still alive. Mr R had the choice of settling his claim as a living claim or a fatal claim. Fatal claims are often more valuable and it is difficult for claimant’s to choose between the two because they want the higher settlement value but they also want the certainty of having the claim completed in their lifetime. For Mr R we were able to negotiate a settlement inbetween the value of the living claim and fatal claim.

The fact that Mr R was based in Australia didn’t delay the claim for asbestos/mesothelioma compensation as much of the correspondence was done using email. The claim was completed within six months from the time Mr R first contacted the team.
