The Court of Protection team here at Boyes Turner is expanding and we like to make sure that you all have a chance to meet our newest recruits, today it is the turn of Lauren HallRuth Meyer, head of the team sat down with her and asked her some questions:

What made you go into law?

My secondary school was very science and maths based which didn’t come very naturally to me so I had to constantly work hard to meet my own expectations. When it came time to picking my A-level options, I decided to go with subjects that were new to me, sounded interesting and might be useful in the future. After my first lesson in Law, I was completely sold on the fact that this was going to be my career. I then went to Bournemouth University to study Law and I graduated this year with upper second class honours.

When did you join Boyes Turner and what is your role?

I joined Boyes Turner on 11 November 2019. I am a paralegal within the Court of Protection team and I am learning every day from the talented fee earners in the team.

I did a couple of unpaid work experience weeks in Family law prior to starting University. I was then lucky enough to do a placement year as part of my degree where I experienced Private Client for six months and then New Build Residential Property for 10 months. It was during this time that I realised how much I enjoyed client care roles so when I jumped at the opportunity to work in this role at Boyes Turner.

What do you like most in your new role?

I am really enjoying the variety of the work and being able to use my brain to problem solve.

Our clients are people who do not have capacity to control their own property and financial affairs so our job is to take care of that for them. My role includes anything from reviewing income and expenditure to researching insurance quotes to drafting reports to the Office of the Public Guardian. No day is quite the same and I am always kept busy so it’s really important to stay organised.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to read crime thrillers and I am a big film fan. One of my favourite franchises is the Marvel Avengers films. I am also a big TV series binge-watcher.

What piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the legal profession?

I would say to research the pathway into law fully so you aren’t surprised as to the length of time it takes or the requirements. Try and get some work experience so you know what to expect and start applying to vacation schemes and training contracts as early as possible! Whilst it can be hard work, it is also incredibly rewarding.
