What is pleural thickening?

Pleural thickening or diffuse pleural thickening is a non-cancerous thickening of the pleural membrane surrounding the lung(s). It can cause breathlessness and may become more severe over time.

Pleural thickening can occur due to asbestos exposure if airborne asbestos particles become embedded in the pleura, causing inflammation and scarring. The effects of pleural thickening normally appear 20 years or more after exposure to asbestos.

Is compensation for diffuse pleural thickening available?

When someone is diagnosed with diffuse pleural thickening then legal advice should be sought to consider if a claim for compensation can be made.

Have you helped others with diffuse pleural thickening?

We have many years of experience in making diffuse pleural thickening claims. Read our case studies to find out how we have helped others.

How much will it cost to bring a claim?

We provide an initial consultation free of charge. At that meeting we can discuss and agree together how to fund a claim. In the majority of cases, we can offer Conditional Fee Agreements (CFA’s or “no win, no fee”).

What should I do next?

We are happy to discuss the possibility of bringing a claim with you, without any obligations to take matters further. This is also the case for the families of those who suffered in life with pleural thickening, contact us at IDclaims@boyesturner.com .

What benefits are available?

  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit -  If you have diffuse pleural thickening and believe the disease was caused by your employment then you are entitled to apply for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, a weekly payment from the government.
  • Pneumoconiosis etc (Workers Compensation) Act 1979 -  A lump sum payment under the Pneumoconiosis etc (Workers Compensation) Act 1979 can also be applied for where the diffuse pleural thickening was caused by employment, provided that no compensation from a civil claim in respect of the disease has already been received. This award is generally made when the employer has ceased trading.

How do I apply for these benefits?

We can assist you in the process of applying for benefits.

Pleural plaques advice

Pleural plaques are small isolated areas of thickening on the inside of the rib cage, commonly caused by a lower dose of asbestos exposure than is needed for asbestosis. It is often referred to as “scarring” of the lining of the lungs and is a benign condition not normally causing any respiratory problems.

Pleural plaques which do not impair breathing no longer entitle you to compensation, however they are an indicator that you have been exposed to asbestos and as such you may be at risk of developing a more serious asbestos related condition.

If your health deteriorates then you should urgently seek the advice of your treating doctors to ensure that you are not suffering from an asbestos related lung condition over and above pleural plaques.

Your service would be very difficult to improve, it is already first class - excellent.  The caring and very efficient way you have helped us is beyond compare 150%!
