A refuse collector (C) was seriously injured when the dustcart in which he was a front-seat passenger collided with a parked lorry and has won £1.8 million in damages from his employer.

C who was 22 at the time had to be cut from the vehicle.  His left leg was shattered and had to be amputated above the knee.

Despite being fitted with a prosthesis, C requires crutches and has to use a wheelchair for longer distances.

The Judge awarding the seven figure sum said “these damages will enable C to enhance his quality of life and no doubt will give his parents some comfort as to his long term future”.

Kim Smerdon, specialist amputation solicitor says:

“Specialist legal advice is essential for amputation claimants to ensure that the injured person does receive the correct amount of compensation to ensure his or her substantial ongoing needs are met.”
