Cerebral Palsy Claim - disabled girl's £7m compensation payout from NHS

BBC News has reported that a disabled girl who was starved of oxygen at birth has been awarded up to £7 million in compensation from the NHS.

Seven-year-old Ella Bryant-Brand suffered brain damage when her umbilical cord became wrapped around her neck and was not removed in time. Her mother, Kim Bryant, said the money from the NHS Litigation Authority will enable her to get the equipment and care she needs for her daughter. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust has apologised.

Ms Bryant has been fighting for compensation since her daughter's birth at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Ella can only say a few words, has limited movement and cannot walk unaided.

Medical negligence solicitor Susan Brown from Reading based law firm Boyes Turner said: "Many of the cerebral palsy cases we deal with result from a lack of oxygen caused
by an umbilical cord event. Negligent hospital staff frequently fail to recognise abnormalities of the fetal heart rate and act to expedite delivery."
