Successful mesothelioma claim against British Telecommunications plc
Boyes Turner's specialist industrial disease lawyers recently acted on behalf of a man who was employed by BT as an electrician working on telephone exchanges in Scotland. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in May 2009.
Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos was widely used in telephone exchanges. Indeed, small bags of asbestos would be used to pack holes that had been drilled in the walls so that cables could be fed through them. He was also exposed to asbestos when lagging was undertaken in boiler houses and when drilling into asbestos wall and ceiling panels.
He had the option of issuing legal proceedings in Scotland or in England. Following the advice of Boyes Turner's industrial disease lawyers legal proceedings were issued in England in order to use the specialist asbestos procedure in the High Court. There were complications because he was additionally suffering from an unrelated cancer.
Legal proceedings were commenced in November 2009 and following negotiation he was happy to accept £163.5k in compensation in January 2010.
